Seminar: Challenges and Problems for Public Policy in Pakistan

A seminar on ‘Challenges and Problems for Public Policy in Pakistan’ was held at the new purpose-built campus of the University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore on March 12, 2008. Dr Mazhar-ul-Haque Sidddiqui, Vice Chancellor, University of Sindh, Hyderabad, was the chief guest on the occasion. The seminar was attended by over a hundred people that included dignitaries, leading educationists, high ranking UMT officials and a large number of students.

Dr Arshad S Karim, Head of Social Sciences, presented the welcome address. Dr Rashid Kausar, Director General Evening Programs UMT, spoke about the different degree programs related to public policy. Dr Mazhar-ul-Haque Sidddiqui explained the concept of public policy and its implications for the state. Javed Aslam, Secretary Excise and Taxation, Government of the Punjab, explained the role of public policy in every sector of life. Saeed Mehdi, former Chief Secretary Sindh, focused on the challenges and problems regarding public policy in Pakistan in the context of national politics. Noor Amna Malik from the Higher Education Commission (HEC), talked about the policies of the HEC in particular and public policy in general. At the end, Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad, Rector UMT observed that it was important to come up with solutions to solve public policy problems.
