Dr. Fatima Sajjad, Assistant Professor
Dr.Fatima Sajjad is a researcher in the field of Critical Peace Studies and Peace Education in Pakistan. Her work questions contemporary education structures in and outside Pakistan and explores ideas for building peace through education. Within Peace Education frame work, she argues for empowering voices of the Global South and for Decolonial thinking in Global Studies and Political Sociology. She has been a part of key conferences on Decolonizing Global Studies, Mapping South-South connections, special panels on Innovations in Sociological Theory from the Global South in International Sociological Association’s (ISA) conference in Brazil. She has been a key note speaker in International Symposium on Countering Violent Extremism in Tokyo, Japan and International Conference on Community based Peacebuilding in Mumbai, India. Her doctoral thesis examined the idea of the ‘Turkish Model’ as a bridge between Islam and the West. Her recent work includes articles in Defense and Peace Economics , Global Transformations: Journal of the Global South , Pakistan Horizon, Journal of Peace Education , book chapters in two key books Radicalization in Pakistan : A Critical Perspective by Routledge and Radicalization in South Asia: Context, Trajectories and Implications published by Sage publications. She is a part of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Global Campus program. Her work reconsiders the problem of youth radicalism in Pakistan and suggests alternative ways to counter extremism in the country. Her earlier work has been published in NDU Journal 2015, a flagship of National Defence University Islamabad, Journal of Political Studies University of the Punjab and IPRI Journal from Islamabad Policy Research Institute. Her work has also been presented in various national and international conferences including International Human Security Conference in Istanbul , Turkey; The Asian Education for Peace and Interfaith Congress in Hiroshima , Japan, conferences in Philippine , Iran , Spain. She was invited by Tokyo University of Foreign Studies to her work on radicalization and education in Pakistan. She was awarded research grant by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) Islamabad and Asian Office of Aerospace Research and Development (AOARD).
Fatima Sajjad has a PhD in International Relations from Punjab University, Lahore. She completed her MPhil in IR from Kinnaird College, Lahore and MSc. in IR from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. She was awarded Principal’s Merit Award at Kinnaird for highest CGPA in her batch.
Fatima has an extensive professional experience as a teacher and teacher trainer. Prior to joining UMT in 2012, she worked as a teacher and trainer at Lahore Grammar School for 8 years. She was awarded Intel Education Award from Intel Education and Ministry of Education for her work as a Teacher Trainer in 2008.She is currently engaged in various research projects exploring issues in critical peace studies and Decolonial thinking in education
