The Department of Gender Studies in School of Advanced Studies organized a lecture titled “A Talk on Feminism in Islam” by Dr Riffat Hassan on Monday, February, 27 2017 at University of Management and Technology, Lahore.
Professor Emerita Dr Riffat Hassan is an acclaimed religious scholar and activist and is internationally acknowledged as pioneer of Islamic feminist theology. She earned her PhD in Philosophy in 1968 from Durham University in England and began her academic career in 1972. She joined University of Louisville in 1976 from where she retired in 2009 and during her time there, she chaired the Religious Studies Program for a few years as well. Her publications include 8 books, 58 book chapters, 52 journal articles and 85 articles in newspapers special supplements on such topics as Muhammad Iqbal, women in Islam, Islam and inter-religious dialogue and human rights in Islam. She has been extensively involved in inter-religious dialogue with Jews, Christians and Muslims, with particular focus on human rights in religious traditions. In 1999 she founded The International Network for the Rights of Female Victims of Violence in Pakistan (INRFVVP).
