Department of Special Needs Education

Introduction

The department of Special Needs Education (SNE) was established under the umbrella of School of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2010. The aim of the department is to provide quality higher education to all students with and without special needs by conferring rich experiences for learning at university level. Presently, the department is offering BS (Hons.), MA, MPhil, and PhD programs in Special Needs Education. Department of Special Needs Education holds the distinction of getting NACTE (National Accreditation Council of Teacher Education) accreditation for the offered programs.

The programs offered by the department are prepared in line with the international movement for inclusive education and it is the credit of UMT that it is the first private sector university including students with hearing impairment in higher education. Salient features of the department of Special Needs Education include Inclusive classrooms, Disability Resource Centre equipped with state of the art facilities like Sign Language interpreter, Software for persons with special needs, Wheel Chairs, White Canes, Perkins Brailler, Stylus Frame, Talking Calculator, Behavior Assessment Tests and Instruments, Computers, Head Phones, video cameras, Braille books, Video Centre and MP3's.
The Department is planning to introduce diploma courses e.g. diploma course in Pakistan Sign language and diploma course in Inclusive Education. The department is putting serious effort in including students with disabilities in other programs of the university. Preparation of Video recorded lectures for students with special needs, development of Assistive Technology, Audiology and Low Vision Lab are others future projects of the department.

Moreover, our department is working vigilantly to create awareness amongst society for increasing acceptance of inclusive classrooms at all levels of education. Therefore, our department is continuously engaged in participation and conduction events like awareness walks, panel discussions, Workshops, seminars, and keynote lectures delivered by eminent local and Foreign Speakers. ICIE is a step taken for further enhancement of the cause of inclusive education. Through this event we hope to show case our efforts, as well as, learn from our global partners, enhance academic and scholarly exchange and built strong community of learning.
