MPhil English Literature

Introduction

Keeping in view the importance of literature and demand in the academia, the Department offers a comprehensive and competitive MPhil English Literature program. This program is designed to provide the students with a comprehensive overview of all the major dimensions / genres of English literature, as well as a focused, intensive approach to certain specific areas of specialization. Another very important purpose is to introduce the students to the historical / evolutionary developments in English literature that have occurred through the ages with a special focus on the various dimensions of modern and contemporary literature.

MPhil English Literature program consists of coursework extending to three semesters. The students take eight courses, each of 3 credit hours and accumulate 24 credit hours in total by the end of their coursework. Five of these courses are compulsory, including Research Methods, Literary Criticism & Theory, Ancient Dramatic Traditions, Postmodern Fiction and Transnational Poetry. In addition to compulsory courses, every student is required to take three optional ones. After finishing the coursework, students write a compulsory dissertation on a topic of their own choice. The students should choose a topic which makes a significant contribution to the field. The thesis earns them 6 credit hours; equivalent to two courses. The research work in thesis is conducted under the supervision of an officially nominated supervisor.
