Overview Road Map

Introduction

The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) is a postgraduate degree. Regarded as an advanced research degree and serves as the highest attainable qualification before the Doctor of Philosophy. M.Phil. is also known as an advanced Master’s degree in which progressive research methods and subject theory are taught. Students are accordingly presented with the M.Phil. Degree during and after completing two years of course work and an original research thesis/dissertation.

M.Phil. Sociology is a two year (30 credit hour) research degree, where the candidates are introduced to an array of subjects which thoroughly encompass contemporary social issues, classical as well as modern Sociological theory, advanced Qualitative and Quantitative research methods, perspectives on the organization, health and illness, and religion. After completion, the participants are empowered to publish their research in HEC approved journals both national and international. At The University of Management & Technology, the Sociology Department takes pride in announcing its M.Phil. Degree recognition Ref no. (1-110/2017/QAD-NOC/HEC/UMTL/18).

Mission Statement and Program Objectives

The M.Phil. Sociology program at the University of Management Technology (UMT) delivers academic rigor from an interdisciplinary perspective and an appreciation of market requirements. The program was designed to cater professionals and students aspiring to build careers in the academia, government and non-government sectors. The primary focus of the program is on research.

Program Structure

The program offers three core courses in research methodology and data analysis. The program offers majors in sociology of development and education, two areas of paramount significance in the current situation of Pakistan.

The program offers two clusters of electives. Students are required to take three elective courses from either cluster A or B. Cluster A was specifically designed for criminal justice and security professionals, and students with a research interest in the areas of crime and crime prevention. Cluster B, offers courses in specific areas of specialization within the field of sociology that were chosen after a careful study of the current job market trends. These include gender, health and illness, political and post-colonial sociology, sociology of technology and migration.

Teaching Philosophy

Our teaching philosophy is not only to impart knowledge but to create new knowledge. Teaching methodology will be interactive and discussion based. Along with basic textbooks, students will read current research publications and will not only gain new knowledge but will learn to critically evaluate and apply it in the process.

Career Prospects

Linking theoretical knowledge to its application in the field is a significant feature of this program. All courses include a two week seminar in which eminent professionals from the government and non-government sector will be invited to deliver lectures and share their experiences from the field with our students. These seminars will allow students to gain from the knowledge and experience of field experts enhancing both their compatibility in the job market and capacity to navigate successful careers in their field of choice.

Admission Requirements

The criteria for admission policy of M.Phil. Sociology Department is 2.5 CGPA in Masters, clearance of GAT/UGAT test with 50% marks and qualifying the interview by the admission panel of Sociology department.
