TWO-DAY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
‘RE-THINKING SECURITY: TRADITIONAL AND NON-TRADITIONAL THREATS IN A TRANSFORMING WORLD’

The Department of Political Science and International Relations (DPSIR) at University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore, in collaboration with the Pakistan Naval War College (PNWC), is proud to host a Two-Day International Conference on “Re-thinking Security in the 21st Century: Traditional and Non-Traditional Threats in a Transforming World” scheduled for October 2025.

The 21st century security landscape is being reshaped by the convergence of traditional threats and emerging transnational challenges. While interstate conflict, military competition, and nuclear deterrence remain pivotal, disruptive technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cyber warfare capabilities, and biotechnology—are fundamentally transforming the nature of conflict.

Simultaneously, the maritime domain is evolving into a contested arena, shaped by geopolitical rivalries, environmental degradation, and legal ambiguities. Moreover, the lens of Critical Security Studies (CSS) challenges the conventional, state-centric paradigms by questioning whose security is prioritized and how threats are constructed.

This conference aims to provide an intellectually stimulating platform for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to critically engage with these evolving debates. Discussions will focus on, but are not limited to, the themes outlined above.
