TWO-DAY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
“Re-Thinking Security: Traditional and Non-Traditional Threats in a Transforming World”
Organized by the Department of Political Science and International Relations (DPSIR)
University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore
In collaboration with Pakistan Naval War College (PNWC)
October 2025
The 21st century security landscape is defined by the convergence of traditional threats and transnational challenges. While interstate conflict, military competition, and nuclear deterrence remain central, emerging technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cyber capabilities, and biotechnology— are reshaping the very nature of conflict.
At the same time, maritime domains are increasingly contested, marked by geopolitical rivalries, environmental degradation, and legal ambiguities. Meanwhile, Critical Security Studies (CSS) challenges dominant, state-centric perspectives, compelling us to ask whose security is prioritized and how threats are constructed.
This conference seeks scholarly dialogue and critical engagement across diverse domains, including—though not limited to—traditional and non-traditional security threats, emerging technologies, maritime security, and alternative perspectives on global security practices.
